What a treasure it is when you pick up a book and discover the real joy of reading again
I have missed that for the last several months.
The choices we have had at our book club have been OK but
it has been almost a year since I read
Water for Elephants, my favorite book in 2008
I have read some good books, but not ones that would be on my list to reread again,
until last week
On Thursday I picked up a debut book I had on reserve at the library,
The Help by Kathryn Stockett
It is set in Jackson Mississippi in 1962
Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan is fresh out of college, her dream is to become a writer.
She is a local socialite, she is bored with her haughty friends and and frustrated about how they treat their maids..
Events that happen give her the idea to write a book about these maids from their perspective.
She is able to enlist three very memorable characters to begin this project.
Skeeter,Aibileen and her best friend Minny are an unlikely trio
Skeeter needs one more person to finish this book,
her nanny Constantine who has left and no one will tell her why.
My favorite character is Minny the third narrator of the book,
a smart mouth maid who lives with an abusive husband.
Minny and her employer Celia made me laugh out loud one moment and cry the next.
I could not put this book down and when I had too,
I thought about it constantly.
To me that is a good read and it is on my list to reread it as soon as I get to a book store.
Then I can take my time and savor every word.

Thanks for the recommendation! I am FINALLY finishing a Henry James book that I think he wrote when he was getting delusional (he did at the end of his life) because it takes FOREVER (even longer than the rest of his books) for anything to happen...almost as long as this sentence ;)
Kitty you have much more patience then me, never could get into Henry James.
I decided this summer I am only reading books that are calling me and not ones I have to force my self to sit down with.
I'll share the good ones.
The same thing was happening to me...I have a pile of books that I couldn't get into, even though they are highly regarded...decided to just stick with what felt right for now...I've been hitting some mysteries! But, this book sounds like something I would love to read...it's on my list!!! I'll let you know how I liked it!
I'll keep my eyes peeled for it the next time I hit up Borders. I just picked up a few books the other day to get through first. That's the one thing about being in between semesters... I get a lot of recreational reading done.
I so admire your discipline as a reader, Green Tea. I am reading the biography of Pete Maravich. Then I have Peggy Lipton's bio on the shelf next. :)
